Celebrating 20 Years of Hydrogen Innovation at HyCentA
Our anniversary event was full of inspiration, appreciation, and a look into the future, with inspiring speeches, powerful panel discussions, and the premiere of our new image video.
In our fast-paced and globalized world, green hydrogen stands out as a key alternative solution in the transition to renewable energy. Making this transition requires breakthrough innovation that go far beyond the state-of-the-art.
Since its establishment in 2005, HyCentA has achieved numerous milestones in hydrogen technology, research and innovation, reflecting our deep commitment to advancing a sustainable energy future by pushing the boundaries of knowledge and technology.
Here are some key Milestones from 20 Years of HyCentA:
- 2005: Establishment of HyCentA – Austria's first hydrogen R&D infrastructure and first hydrogen (H2) filling station
- 2006: liquid hydrogen tests of the BMW Hydrogen 7 fleet
- 2009: Mercedes H2 – Austria's first hydrogen vehicle with approval
- 2010: Launch of electrolysis research and onsite hydrogen production
- 2012: ELOG – Europe’s first indoor H2 filling station, winner of the Energy Globe Award Worldwide
- 2015: wind2hydrogen – world’s first 100 kW PEM high-pressure electrolyzer, winner of the Energy Globe Styria Award
- 2015: Founding and board member of WIVA P&G – Austria’s hydrogen energy model region
- 2016: HIFAI-RSA – Europe’s most advanced fuel cell system test bench, nominated for the National Mobility Award
- 2018: Launch of the flagship region WIVA P&G – awarded European H2 Valley of the Year 2023
- 2018: FC REEV – Fuel Cell Range Extended Electrical Vehicle, winner of the Energy Globe Award Austria
- 2019: HySnow – world’s first snowmobile with a fuel cell drive, Martin Aggarwal Future Mobility Prize
- 2020: UpHy – Austria's first hydrogen gas analysis laboratory, winner of the National Mobility Award 2021
- 2021: Start of the COMET project HyTechonomy
- 2023: Approval as a K1 Center in the COMET program, researching innovative hydrogen technologies with more than 40 leading (inter)national scientific and company partners
- 2023: Development of novel impedance spectroscopy for electrolysis – winner of the Styria Innovation Award for R&D Sustainability
- 2025: Launch of Austria’s first Hydrogen Valley, enabling the advancement of green hydrogen technologies – for industrial, energy, and mobility applications
- 2025: Expansion of research infrastructure: new laboratory building, new materials lab, and new single-cell and stack test benches
